Help Me Figure Out The Future of My Collection!

with 3 comments

I’m at a crossroads right now of what I want to collect going forward. My main goal has been to collect each of the Topps base sets from 1960 through 1990. Obviously this would take me many years to do, and would be my main focus of my collecting for the next 10 to 15 years.

However, I was fortunate enough to have a card in this year’s Allen & Ginter set for being the 2009 Ginter Code champion (#165), and part of me wants to scrap the 1960-90 idea, and instead start trying to complete a master set of 2010 A&G. I would collect the entire set of the following: base, regular mini, A&G back mini, black border mini, no number mini, Bazooka minis, all of the special mini sets (wordsmiths, animals, Celesital Stars, etc.), all of the boxloaders and n43s, all of the relics, and all of the autographs.

I wouldn’t go for the silk cards, the red autos, wood cards, blank backs, book cards, printing plates, or any of the other really rare stuff like nameplates or dinosaur relics.

Obviously the 2010 set has deep sentimental value to me as I actually have a card in the set. What are your thoughts? Which would you do if you were me?  Leave a comment below and let me know!

I also want to give an update on my chase for the various versions of my card…here is where I currently stand on that end.  First, the fronts:

Now the backs:

So I have the regular base, regular mini, A&G back mini, black-border mini, no number mini, bazooka mini, silk (error), blue printing plate, and the 1/1 blank back.  Still need: black, yellow, red, printing plate, and the 1/1 wood card.  If you locate any of these let me know!

Don’t forget to leave a comment for what route my collection should go…2010 Master A&G set, as that set has more sentimental value than any other set ever will, or go for the 1960-1990.  Thanks for reading!

All The Hits From My Allen & Ginter Case!

with 9 comments

Ladies and gents, I’ve spent this rainy morning in Louisville scanning all the hits from my case of 2010 Allen & Ginter.  Pretty much all of this is up for trade/sale, but hurry, because a lot of this will end up on eBay soon!  Make sure to check out my trade list for this year’s set, as I have a lot of needs/extras!

First up, are the hits that I am definitely keeping…the Cueto auto didn’t come from my case, I acquired that in a trade.

Next up, the autos and rip card (which I ripped in 2.2 seconds after seeing it was Hudson)!:

On to the best of the jersey relics:

The rest of the jersey relics:

The bat relics:

The last of the bat relics and my mini hits (the red auto was in the rip card):

Let me know if there is anything in here you need!!

2009 Upper Deck Series 2 Blaster Results

with 3 comments

Okay so yesterday I had a post about 2009 UD series 2.  Well on my way home from work today I stopped by Target, and for those of you know me you know my golden rule…if you stop at Target for something you must pick up cardboard while you are there.  Thus, I picked up a blaster to see if I can knock off some of those cards on my want list.  Just an FYI, I also ordered a series 1 hobby box online yesterday, so you’ll see that review sometime soon.

I only needed about a third of the base cards that I pulled from the blaster, so I’ve updated my want list for those, and also added the doubles that I now have.  As for the rest:

UD4

Above we have a Jay Bruce ‘Emerald Super Rare’ (again, can someone tell me just how rare some of the Starquest parallels are?), a Michael Jordan Goodwin preview (I love, love, love this card.  I used to be a HUGE MJ collector back in the day…more to come on this in a future post), another Kyle Gibson jersey (this time gray instead of navy), and a 20th ann. Mike Schmidt.  As I did yesterday, here are the Starquest cards for those chasing them:

Silver Common:  Lincecum, Phillips, Wang, Pedroia, B.J. Upton

Blue Uncommon:  Hamels, Kinsler, Youkilis

Gold Rare: B.J. Upton

Emerald Super Rare:  Bruce

By the way, has anyone heard of this Zistle site yet?  Check out my Ginter Code partner’s blog for a post about it…I think I might give it a try.  Looks as if the more collectors the better, so I urge all you readers to check it out, it’s free!  I’ll put a post up about my experience when I get a chance.

Use Protection…

with 2 comments

As I’m starting to get back into The Hobby, I find myself wondering how I want to protect my cards from damage.  There are endless options:  three ring binders with the 9 cards a page protective sheets, top loaders, monster boxes, the hinged-thingamjigs, penny sleeves, shoeboxes, I could go on and on.  Right now I’ve got a bunch in top loaders and a bunch in binders, but I want to make sure I’m doing this the safest way possible.

I’m trying to sort my vast collection that I’ve amassed over the years (including all of my new goodies from my three-month binge since I’ve been sucked back into collecting) so I need to come up with the best strategy to protect my collection, and also to catalog it.  Is there a certain dollar value  that any of you require to put a card in a top loader vs. a penny sleeve?  What about complete sets…do you store those in large boxes with other cards or do you get a box for just that set?

Lastly, how do you catalog your cards (or do you?)?  Is there software that you use to track what you own, do you do it yourself in a spreadsheet?  Any helpful tips from my collecting colleagues would be greatly appreciated!

What kind of collector are you??

with one comment

So as I’ve decided to come back to the hobby (actually, it’s more like the hobby decided for me, I had little control!) I’ve struggled with defining what type of collector I am.  I originally started collecting in 1987 when my dad brought home a pack of 1987 Topps with the wood border (I’ve now learned the set is practically worthless, but it will forever hold a place in my heart!).  I collected nothing but baseball until around 1992 when Jordan-mania hit, and shifted to basketball cards which I would collect for another 5 years or so until I became “too cool” for the hobby.

I’ve bought packs here and there over the past 10 or 15 years, but nothing major, especially compared to the splurge I’ve had over the past few months since I read about the ‘83 Fleer Project

The hobby was so new to me when I came back…autographed cards?  Game-used jerseys?  Refractors?  Huh???  Not to mention how many different brands, and sub-products within those brands, I was completely lost, I just knew I had to have some wax.  I’ve bought several boxes since that day (07 Exquisite Rookie Signatures, 08 Topps Co-Signers, 08 Allen & Ginter, just to name a few, more on these in a later post), bought haven’t really felt like I’ve gotten my “value” back.  I’ve started putting together some sets (74 & 75 Topps) but I don’t get the excitement of opening packs.  I’ve started a player collection of my favorite player growing up, Barry Larkin, but there are just soooo many cards out there.

I think I’ll try to be a balance of the three, but that leads me to my question for the readers (not that I have any yet or anything!), what type of collector are you?
