Mail Day! Another Ginter Silk!

leave a comment »

Today I received a trade package from the perfect type of trade.  I sent about 20 different cards that I already had several of to begin with, in exchange for one card that I highly covet.  Being able to get rid of extra cards and reducing the excess fat in my collection is one of my main collecting goals for 2011.

Enough about that…today I received another one of my silk error cards from this year’s set.  In case you weren’t aware, Topps’ quality control department must have been on break when printing my silk card, and they somehow managed to put Brett Gardner’s picture on my card.

I was contacted a while back about someone who also had one but he hasn’t responded to me so I’m not sure if he has it.  So there you have it…I have #s 2, 6, 7, and 9.  If you can track down 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, or 10, I will provide you an offer you can’t refuse!

Picked Up Two Of My Error Cards This Week…Wait, What??

with 2 comments

As many of you probably know, I was awarded a card in this year’s Allen & Ginter set (card #165 to be exact!).  My goal has been to collect each of the 12 versions of the card and I’ve done pretty well so far.  I bought an entire case of Ginter this year and was lucky enough to pull 8 of my cards…7 base cards and 1 A&G back mini.  I was able to pick up a black border mini off ebay pretty quickly, and I’ve got a regular mini in the mail on the way to me.  Today I won an auction for the only no-number mini I’ve seen, for only a couple bucks (funny thing is, I offered the seller $10 just to end it early and get it out to me…he declined the offer).  I’ve been negotiating with a guy on one of the printing plates, but haven’t heard a thing about the other three, or the wood card (if you hear of anyone having these PLEASE let me know…I can make it well worth it!).

That just leaves the silk cards…I’m guessing if you’re reading this you know about the silk cards in A&G, but if not, each mini card in the set was also created on silk rather than cardboard, and there are only 10 copies of each silk card that were made.  I stumbled upon an ebay auction a couple weeks ago that has Brett Gardner’s silk card, only it had my name on it.  I had no clue if it was just an error on his card that ended up with my name on there, or if it was an error to my card where his picture ended up there.  After seeing another *correct* Gardner silk show up on ebay, I’m convinced there will be no correct silk of mine…oh well, at least I have my name on it and can say that I officially have an error card…

After speaking with Jason Wong, the 2008 champ, he told me he had only seen 2 of his 10 silk cards before (he was only able to get his hands on one).  Luckily, I’ve got two already and hopefully another on the way.

Oh yeah, Jason was kind enough to send me one of his signed cards (see above)…he’s a class act.

Speaking of signed cards, my first batch goes out tomorrow to everyone who sent me cards (still feels weird to sit down and spend time autographing things…don’t know if I’ll ever get used to that).  I was finally able to get a PO box, so for those of you wanting TTM autos of my card, please send it with a self-addressed stamped envelope to:

Nick Jacoby
PO Box 43196
Louisville, KY  40253

If you could, please send any versions of my card that are extras that I can keep (especially the minis).  I have a ton of friends and family asking for them!

leave a comment »

First pack and Chris Olds pulls my base and my mini in the SAME pack…pretty amazing!  Believe it or not this was actually the first time I’ve seen this card.  It sounds like the 30th is still the date for Ginter to be released…hopefully my case from GlobalSportsCards.com gets here around the same time!

Everyone be sure to check their site out…they GUARANTEE they can beat any legitimate price online…why wouldn’t you shop with them??

Update On My 2010 Allen & Ginter Code Champion Card

leave a comment »

Everyone – sorry for the lack of updates and I appreciate all the people who have emailed me to catch up.  I wanted to give everyone an update on the Ginter Code Champion card in the 2010 set.

First, I regretfully have to inform you that Mike won’t be on the front of the card.  The card can really only fit one person and maintain the quality that Allen & Ginter expects, thus I will be the only person on the front as I was the person to submit the final answer.

However, I believe Mike will still have a blurb on the back of the card, so he won’t be fully escaping glory of being a co-champ.

From what I’ve been told, and this should be news to everyone, my card will be #165 in the set.  I’ve also been told that A&G will be released on June 30, so just over three weeks from now.

As for all of the people who have asked me about TTM autographing my card if they pull it, I’m more than happy to do so, and wouldn’t think of charging money for it.  All I ask is for you to also send one card from my want list with my card (I’ll update my want list before the set is released)!  I will also be working on a “Rainbow” (if you can really even call it that) of my card, so any help with that would be much appreciated!

As Mike is going to have a blurb on the back of the card, don’t hesitate to reach out to him to have him sign the back!

Last but not least, I’m taking a run at the 2010 Ginter Code, and if anyone is interested in helping out, let me know!

As soon as I get any further updates on anything I’ll be sure to let everyone know.

If anyone has any question, drop me a line:  cardboardoverload@gmail.com

Thanks!

Scans of Complete 2009 Ginter Code Champion Codebreaker Set!

with 2 comments

So I had a few minutes to go ahead and scan all 70 of the cards I received from Topps today for the 2009 Ginter Code prize.  I’ve listed them all below…notice that Dominique Wilkins is signed in red, while all others are in blue…interesting.

2009 Ginter Code Champion Codebreaker Cards Received (w/Scan)!

with 7 comments

Today I received the full set of auto’s as the 2009 Ginter Code champion codebreaker.  There are 70 auto’s, and include every auto from the normal auto set, except for Alex Rios.  There was also only one Phelps auto which was a little disappointing because I believe he had 7 or 8 in the set.  They are in a special frame and all of these auto’s are technically 1/1’s.  Here is a scan of the Phelps card:

The photo isn’t great quality because I’m at work and just took the picture with my iPhone.  The frame is a lot lighter than the normal autos, and there is also the word “CODEBREAKER” along the right border, which makes them 1/1.

This of course is only the first prize, as I will be on a card in the 2010 set!

If anyone has any questions let me know!

2009 Ginter Code Champion Update!

with one comment

Ladies and gents (well, mostly gents), I FINALLY received the phone call from Topps this week about the prize for cracking the 2009 Ginter Code!  As stated before, the prize is a special set of each of the framed autographs from the 2009  set.  The person at Topps I spoke with said they have a special codebreaker frame with 1/1 on them!

And even bigger news:  I will be on a card in the 2010 set!  That’s right, even though that was never mentioned as part of the prize, I couldn’t pass up the offer.  Mike from JD’s Wildcardz, who was my partner in crime in solving the Ginter Code, will also be on the card!

I should be receiving the special cards in the mail this week and will be sure to post some scans!

By the way, my other blog has picked up a lot of steam lately.  I’ve been linked to by ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Deadspin, SPORTS by BROOKS, and many others.  It was even ESPN’s Sportsnation Site of the Day a few weeks back!

Be sure to check it out and let me know what you think:  www.ThatFan.com

2009 A&G Box Break Results #3

with one comment

So my local hobby shop East End Sports Cards had talked to me about coming in to get a picture for the shop and their website because they wanted to brag about having the 2009 Ginter Code breaker as a customer.  I finally made it in there today and was given some very very sad news…the shop will be closing down!  Sad day for me as it is pretty much the only decent shop in town.  They say they plan on opening back up before Christmas at a new location, so I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Anyways, I also went up there to look for some singles to complete my two A&G want lists for 2009 (base set and the code cards).  I went through the singles they had left to match my list and pulled about 10 base and 5 code cards.  I also grabbed some season highlight sketch cards for fellow code cracker Mike at JD’s Wild Cardz.  So I had about 20 cards total and asked for a price and he said I could just have them (he threw in last month’s Beckett as well).  After the generosity I had to buy something so I threw down my $100 and caved in for another box of Ginter (and it was a good one!).  Here’s the rundown:

First, the Boxloader: Grady Sizemore.  Okay I was a little thrown off by this one.  My first two boxes had boxloaders that were about 6 inches tall, whereas this one was just a tad bigger than a normal card.  Oh well.

Base set: I received 133 base cards with no doubles.  70 of these cards were still needed for the base set, so I was pretty happy with that.  Mike mailed me about 20 base cards today that I needed, but now I only really need one of those.  Sorry Mike! After today’s box, the cards I got from my hobby shop, and Mike’s generous gift, I’m down to 26 base cards, and 25 of those are SPs.  If you have what I need let me know!

Ginter Code parallels: 2  (Peavy and Andrew Miller)  **Mr. Miller’s code card (shown below) was a key component to the Ginter Code…another infamous boxed “L”!  When I first found out this clue when the code cracking first got started, I informed Mario at Wax Heaven that I thought “Andrew Miller is going to be a huge part of the code”.  I was right!

Regular base Minis: 10 (Ellsbury, Nobel, Tuiasosopo, P. Coke, Pedroia, D. Lowe, Sizemore, Danks, Aviles, Huff (SP))

A&G-back Minis: 7 (Hermida, R. Perry, Morse, Victorino, D. Murphy, E. Cabrera, Burrell (SP))

Black border Minis: 3 (B. Giles, S. Olsen, A. Gordon)

World’s Biggest Hoaxes mini: 2 (Anna Anderson, Runaway Bride)

National Heroes mini: 2 (NH31, NH33)

National pride: 24 (N1-N6, N56-N75)  I already had each of these, so if you are trying to complete this set let me know!

Baseball highlights: 3 (Rivera, Longoria, Lidge) Funny thing about this is that these are three of the sketch cards I picked up for Mike today.  Guess I can keep one set for myself now.

Relics:  Okay I typically never have good luck when it comes to hits.  Not even typically, I have no luck period.  Today made up for that pretty nicely.  I pulled an A-Rod and Ryan Howard relic, both with fat pinstripes down the middle, along with an Alex Rios auto redemption.  Speaking of which, I hadn’t heard of anyone pulling a redemption card out of this product before this one, have you?  The relics are a tremendous addition to my collection.

Here are some scans…if you have any interest in any of these let me know (except for my relics!).  My base card want list, along with my base card trade list is in the link to the right.  Haven’t had a chance to add the code card want list but will soon.   Stop back by and lets work out a trade!Ginter Box #3
